Aidan’s Story
Aidan’s Journey: A Path to Independence
Aidan’s journey towards supported living began in 2016 when he was just 17. His family registered their interest with the Rossendale Trust, knowing that one day Aidan might be ready to take that step towards greater independence. Over the years, whenever a suitable vacancy became available, we contacted Aiden’s mum, but it was only in the last year or so that the family felt ready to begin the process in earnest.
Throughout this time, we worked closely with Aidan and his family to ensure every step of his transition was carefully planned and entirely person-centred. The goal was always to make sure Aidan, his family, and everyone involved felt comfortable and supported. His mum explains:
“As you know, it has been a long journey finding the right supported accommodation for Aidan. Since leaving college and becoming an adult, it has been a lot of work finding the right activities for Aidan to do, to give him the best experience and opportunities, and so finding a forever home where he could carry on with his established routine was very important.”
At Rossendale Trust, our tenants all have their own unique personalities and interests, and these are accommodated within the planning and support arrangements. This includes moving at the right pace to ensure the transition goes well, and Aidan has been comfortable with the move at each stage. This personalisation is crucial to the success of the settling-in process and gives confidence and peace of mind to the family.
In 2022, Aidan started attending horticulture sessions at Oakwood. He embraced the social opportunities, built friendships, and developed new skills that boosted his confidence. As he thrived, the idea of supported living became more of a reality.
In 2024, Aidan and his family visited his potential new home, and the local authority approved his care package. Aidan spent time getting to know fellow tenants and staff, and even joined in events like our fashion show with his friends. He was given the time and space to think about the move, discuss it with his family, and only when he felt ready did he sign his tenancy.
Now, Aidan is happily settling into his new home, but at his own pace. He continues to divide his time between his family home (and his beloved cat) and his new home, taking the transition step by step. With our continued support, Aidan will move fully when he feels completely ready—on his own terms, with confidence and independence.
