Lisa’s Story
Lisa’s WorkTaste Journey: Building Confidence and Skills
Lisa moved to Maple Avenue in Macclesfield in August 2022, where she quickly settled into life with her three housemates. Not long after, she began her WorkTaste journey with the Rossendale Trust, a programme designed to help individuals build confidence, learn new skills, and connect with the local community.
Her first placement was at The Guild for Lifelong Learning in Wilmslow, where she worked in the café from September 2022 to July 2024. During her time there, Lisa earned her Level 1 Food Hygiene Certificate, gained basic kitchen skills, and completed The Essentials of Food Hygiene course—her first step towards a fulfilling career.
In her current role, Lisa works in the Sixth Form kitchen at King’s School, Macclesfield, supported by WorkTaste coach Sarah. The team at King’s School, led by Donna, has gone above and beyond to ensure Lisa feels welcomed, valued, and engaged in her tasks, which include food preparation, cake decorating, stock control, and cleaning.
“Supporting Lisa is an absolute joy,” says Sarah. “Her confidence grows week by week, and she’s already making a fantastic impact. It’s wonderful to see her enjoying the work and building relationships with the staff and pupils.”
Lisa herself says, “I love the people, and I enjoy my job!”
The staff at King’s School echo Sarah’s sentiments. Kevin Kent, General Manager of Holroyd Howe, notes, “Lisa has become a great asset to the team. Her decorated cupcakes and Christmas gingerbread treats were a big hit with the pupils!”
Lisa’s mum, Dianne, adds, “I’m so proud of Lisa’s progress. She’s grown in confidence, matured so much, and even improved her writing skills. Thank you to everyone at the Trust for supporting her.”
Lisa’s story is a shining example of the transformative impact of our WorkTaste programme.
